Walking in the City for Fun

People walking hand in hand. Tourists snapping photos of a popular landmark. Walking for leisure in a city park. Most people don't realize it, but the city presents us with many opportunities for walking that have nothing to do with rushing to our destination.

Yes, people do a fair amount of rushing around in the city. But, walking "just because" is a pleasure because it gives me a way to experience my favorite cities. When I used to live near Munich, I loved walking around the city park before finding a place for dinner and some drinks.

If you have a city nearby, take some time walking around just because you feel like it. Chances are, you'll see your city in a whole new way.

How to Enjoy the City on Foot

Walking in the city for the joy of it is a bit of a lost art. I thought I would give you my favorite tips for turning it into a wonderful outing.

  • Your frame of mind. Do you find walking to be a chore? Well, in order to enjoy your city walk, it is a good idea to be in the right mindset. If you find walking to be a chore, you won't get as much out of the experience.
  • Dress in your best. When you make an effort with your appearance, it instantly puts you in a good mood. Going for a walk while in this frame of mind can really make the walk enjoyable.
  • Be a tourist. Just for a few hours, try thinking like a tourist. Chances are, your city has a lot of beauty. Most people take this beauty for granted while they are going about their daily lives.
  • Take pictures. When you go for your walk, make sure you take your camera. Take a picture whenever something inspires you or the mood strikes you. It can help you see the city in a whole new way.

In order to have fun walking in the city, you don't need to walk fast. In fact, you may want to slow down a bit so that you can really enjoy what your city has to offer.

Enjoying Your Walk

One of the main things to remember is that no matter what you do or where you walk, the point is to enjoy yourself. What is it that you find enjoyable? If you love walking around with your headphones jammed in your ear, then by all means keep doing it. If you like walking slow or if you have a certain route that you enjoy, feel free to use it.

The point is to use your walks to help you see the city in a new way. Your goal should be to find a way to enjoy the city - and walking can help you get to that point.
