Squirrels are tenacious - they're build that way. But, we humans can be smart, too. Here are my tips.

The Right Bird Feeder

A good bird feeder, like the Brome Squirrel Buster, is the first place you should start. Not every bird feeder will actually work. I found a nice video on youtube that I have included here that gets the job done. The Brome feeder has gotten a lot of good reviews.

Avoid Cruelty

Yes, Squirrels do tend to annoy you and mess up your bird feeding efforts. But that is no reason to justify animal cruelty. I say, if you can't figure out a way to prevent the squirrel from getting at the food in an ethical way, just forget it. Let the Squirrel eat! And of course, you could simply stop feeding the birds...

Make Your Own Bird Feeder

You could also make your own bird feeder or modify your existing feeder to be Squirrel proof. For this you will need to observe how your Squirrel travels so you can know what to do. My father puts milk jugs at the base of the feeder - it seems to work for now.
