Dealing with Water Retention

I know all too well what it feels like to retain water because I am extremely prone to it - especially at that "certain time of the month." My hands and feet feel puffy. I gain at least five pounds.

Not only that, but I really love salty foods. I could eat an entire bag of chips or jar of olives in one sitting. Overeating alone causes me to retain water. Eating very salty words makes the situation much, much worse.

And to make matters even more difficult for myself, I tend to crave salty foods when it is that "certain time of the month".

Because of my ongoing battle with this, I know exactly what I need to do in order to fix it.

Healthy Habits that Beat Water Retention

The first place I start when treating my edema is to alter some things about my lifestyle. Poor lifestyle choices can cause it. If that is the case, than changing our habits can get it under control. Continue with the good habits and it can prevent it in the first place.

See a Doctor

Is water retention, or edema, a problem for you? Please see a doctor before you try any of these remedies and lifestyle changes. You will want to clear some of these with your doctor. Not only that, but edema can mean that something is wrong. It's up to your doctor to figure it out.

Drink Enough Water

Sometimes, not getting enough water can cause water retention. Make sure you are drinking at least eight cups of water a day. Drinking water can help flush out the excess moisture, too.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Too many carbohydrates. Eating a high salt diet. These are things that can cause the body to retain water. Clean up your diet and your body will thank you! Consume enough protein. Eat the right carbohydrates. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables... these will all help keep edema at bay.

Foods to Eat

In addition there are some foods that you can eat and juices you can drink that can help the body get rid of water retention.

  • cranberry
  • cucumber
  • asparagus
  • watermelon
  • grapefruit
  • celery
  • banana

I find these foods to be very helpful when I am afflicted with water retention. Celery is particular helpful because it helps me avoid eating potato chips.

Reduce Edema Naturally

In addition to changing your lifestyle to include some healthy habits, there are natural remedies that I use to help get rid of water retention. Here are my favorites.

  • Fennel. I often chew fennel seeds to get rid of water retention. You can drink the tea, as wll. Fresh fennel bulb works, too, but I personally don't like the way it tastes that much so I never take advantage of it.
  • Dandelion. This is my favorite natural edema remedy. It gets rid of the edema while also replenishing potassium levels. When taking a diuretic, potassium levels can get depleted. This plant replaces it while at the same time getting rid of the excess water!
  • Caffeine. Natural substances like coffee and tea contain caffeine so are therefore good at getting rid of edema. An added bonus is that they are both highly accessible.

When it comes to getting rid of water retention, I definitely prefer to use one of these natural remedies!
